House - Snarky Loving Fun
Anybody got a good idea on how to start?
Oh! For those in the know, or not, what do you think of the medicine part of the show?
It makes me dizzy. And they're always pregnant, damnit. I'm waiting for the mpreg episode.
I have a question about the last ep. Would a doctor - let alone a team of doctors - really perform that many procedures (lumbar puncture, bone-marrow biopsy, and I think x-rays) without first taking a basic medical history including ascertaining the last menstrual period?
Yeah, she seemed low-risk, but wouldn't they at least ask if there was a possibility of pregnancy?
Yeah! A fine point. My doctor always asks, even when I'm there for a sore throat.

Well, yeah, possibly they might have. But she was only 12, so that's not exactly gonna be standard *or* telling. I don't remember anyone asking me that question until I was 15 or so.
Well I'm only tangentially in the know via my walking partner (Internal Med) but as we generally spend three miles deconstructing House on Wednesday mornings and as she's never gonna be on LJ herself I'll pass along her pet peeves...
Foreman, Chase, and Cameron do EVERY procedure and all their own lab work. Are there even any techs on the show? And way to few nurses. And how do they have a patient load of one most weeks? Then again if the ratio is four docs to every patient then maybe they could make time for all of those procedures. But generally the medicine is better than say ER. Plus there's Hugh Laurie and massive snark
I think they're horrifically spoiled in terms of their patient load because House is some sort of diagnostic genius who can do whatever he wants. Vogler was a jerk, but he was right that keeping House around isn't a very good business decision.
Of course, I figure that's just one of those TV show things you have to shrug off, like how it's always SG-1 that saves the world, or...I'm blanking on an example for non-SG-1 watchers, but you get the idea. What I'd like to know is how Wilson, who's supposedly the head of a department, has so much time to just hang around and talk to House...
Well heckers, I'd make time to hang around and talk to House. I do make time to sit around and watch others talk to House. But it is odd.
None of this bothers me at all, I can suspend with the best of 'em. Though I would probably be mightily irked if I were say, SG-6. Always a bridesmaid....
Oh, it doesn't actually bother me. I just find it amusing. It's like that on every TV show, where you've got the small group of people who everything happens to. You have to start feeling sorry for them after a while (although not so much on House where they have it pretty easy most of the time).
As an excuse for why they run all the tests themselves, maybe it's because they have such a small patient load and they're bored. I guess running gels or whatnot beats sitting around doing nothing if you left your book at home. Failing that, it could be because House is paranoid and doesn't trust people. Every time they do send a test off, they seem to question it, even though it's usually right.

I think THAT falls into the category of "It's a TV show, and seeing the main characters would be a good idea."
Which they wouldn't, if they had all the techs and nurses and whatnot. It's like going to the dentist. All hygienist, five seconds of dentist poking at your mouth.
And no one really wants to watch lab techs.
Uh there's medicine? I'm sorry I'm too busy laughing and lusting after House.
